Point of sale hardware was the latest target for hackers and Hancock Fabrics issued a notice in the form of an open letter to its customers regarding the security breach.

The perpetrators switched out PIN pads at a select number of stores to access and obtain customer data. Hancock Fabrics is working with law enforcement to investigate and hopefully apprehend the hackers. As a precaution, the company has replaced all PIN pads with upgraded models. The company is also encouraging customers who may have noticed suspicious and potentially fraudulent activity in their accounts to contact their financial institutions immediately. This incident is raising awareness in the point of sale community regarding the use of PIN pads and the security parameters that companies are looking for in a quality POS hardware product.
